Canine Weight Loss Camp Getting dogs back on track to a happy, healthy life
Weight Loss InfoCanine obesity unfortunately has become a growing trend. Obesity is a risk factor for disease. Not only does it increase the stress on the joints and heart, but also increases hormone and inflammatory mediator release, creating chronic low-level inflammation. If your dog is overweight, getting him back to a healthy weight will help him live a happier, more active, and longer life.
Cosmic Canine is joining the fight against canine obesity by offering a specialized nutritional and exercise program for dogs struggling to achieve a healthier weight. This program is designed to get you and your dog started on the right track and help you along the way. Before starting the program, your dog must be cleared by your veterinarian to eliminate any medical causes for the increased weight.
All programs begin with an analysis of your dog’s diet by our consulting animal nutritionist, Dr. Susan Lauten. She then creates a new diet plan for safe weight loss for your dog. Each program must be monitored for a minimum of one month to be able to assess your dog’s weight loss and later adjusted to achieve a plan for sustained 2% weight loss every two weeks. At the end of one month, you will be given feeding instructions for your dog to continue the weight loss progress until the goal weight is reached and how to maintain it once reached.
We have the following options for the weight loss program:
1. Daily Drop-off – Weekday Weight loss Daycare This program is a minimum one month program for those who need their dog to lose weight but need help getting a start in their feeding and exercise program. In this program, you can drop your dog off in the morning, we feed and walk your dog as needed, and you pick your dog up after work. You do not feed your dog anything other than treats we have allocated for the day. We manage all the feedings and exercise to make sure your dog stays on track! On Fridays, we send you home with your dog’s allocated meals so you can start getting used to the new routine. At the end of the one month, you can chose to continue to drop off your dog or keep up the routine at home on your own. You will be given diet and exercise instructions and a time-schedule for your dog’s weight loss goals. We also suggest you continue with two-week check-ins until your dog reaches the goal weight.
2. Two week Check-ins This program is for people who want to handle their dog’s program on their own, but need some guidance to start. Again, all programs start with dietary analysis and a new diet plan and exercise program. Then, you come back every two weeks for a weigh-in to see if any adjustments are needed to keep him on the target 2% every two weeks weight loss goal.
3. Weight Loss Camp If you are going out of town or just need to get your dog started out on the right track, we offer boarding with the weight loss program. The in-house program can be as long or as short as you wish, but must be continued with either the drop-off program or check-in program in order to insure continued progress.
